Bill is a native Californian of bilingual/bicultural background. His maternal grandparents fled the chaos and poverty of the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century and eventually settled in the Santa Clara Valley. He attended the University of Santa Clara where he received a B.A. in Spanish and Political Science, then attended the University of Texas at Austin where he received the M.A. in Romance Linguistics and the Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics. Bill is widely known for his work in input processing and processing instruction, as well as pedagogical matters related to communicative language teaching. He has published over 70 articles and book chapters, six authored or co-authored books, seven edited or co-edited books, and a number of reports and interviews.
