The French program offers a Master of Arts degree that requires two years of study beyond the Bachelor of Arts. Students take a variety of courses in French and Francophone Literatures, French Cinema, and culture. Graduate students also may be awarded teaching assistantships to gain experience in the classroom and support their graduate studies.
New Program! Dual (Accelerated) B.A./M.A. Program
Selected students can obtain both a BA and an MA in French in 5 years by "double-applying" 9 hours of upper-level course work to both degrees. The 5th year is normally funded; students participate in teaching beginning French and are paid as a Teaching Assistant or Graduate Part-Time Instructor. Some summer school is required. Applications are competitive.
The French program is very proud of its Graduate Student Teaching Assistants, many of whom are international students with native or near-native fluency, and several of whom are Fulbright fellows. TAs receive a tuition waver and stipend in exchange for their assistantship duties, which include advising, tutoring, grading, course preparation, and team teaching with a faculty mentor. They complete 18 hours of graduate-level coursework, including a course in methodology, before becoming instructor of record in Introductory and Intermediate language courses.
The French program collaborates with the College of Education for teacher certification in French. The standard program requires 24-27 hours at the 2000-level and above, which must include 9 hours of 4000-level courses in French. Students seeking secondary certification in French must complete LING 4311, preferably before their student teaching begins. Students seeking bilingual education endorsement, ESL endorsement, or secondary or elementary certification in French, should consult with advisors in the College of Education and in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures.
