Earn 6 credit hours in German at Texas Tech University's Summer Program in Berlin and Wust, Germany. Home stays and an immersion atmosphere make language learning easy and fun! We teach two courses, German language at the intermediate level and the culture and history of Germany with a special focus on the area of Saxon-Anhalt and the beautiful medieval "Romanesque Road."  Travel excursions and tours are part of this wonderful study abroad opportunity.

BASIC INFORMATION
Texas Tech organizes and operates its own Summer Study Abroad Program in the village of Wust and the capital city of Berlin in Germany.  Students at an intermediate to advanced level of study are encouraged to participate in the five-week program which includes two regular Texas Tech University courses taught by a faculty member in the German Program at Tech.  Although our program is one of the least expensive available at any American university, we organize a full slate of travel activities and excursions so that students will get the most out of their time abroad. Some highlights and benefits of the program include:

•Visits to Berlin and the medieval cities of Quedlinburg, Wernigerode, Tangermόnde and Hafelberg
        • Group excursions to memorials, museums, castles, palaces, churches and monasteries

• A total immersion environment that makes learning German easy

• Lodging with very friendly host families in the quiet village of Wust in the countryside of Saxon-Anhalt
        • Opportunities to travel through Germany and Europe after the program

• A chance to finish a German Minor while abroad during the summer or work on a German Major

• An forgettable capstone experience for your German studies at Tech!

DATES OF THE BERLIN AND WUST PROGRAM
Departure is usually in the last week of May. Students arrive in Berlin, where they will begin their cultural tours of eastern Germany and Berlin. They travel by bus to a number of tourist cities of Sachsen-Anhalt and later proceed to their host family in Wust. The program ends after a total of 5 weeks, usually at the end of June.  Students may return to Texas Tech for the Second Summer Session is they wish to do so.

DEADLINES: The final date for submission of applications and for the payment of the initial non-refundable payment of $150.00 is 5 December 2003. Additional deadlines will be announced during program meetings.

Summer dates for the 2004 program are currently being organized; they will be posted once they become available.

PROGRAM COURSES AND REGISTRATION
Students typically register for Texas Tech courses GERMAN 3305 and GERMAN 3306 while participating in the program.  Under extraordinary circumstances and with the special consent of the program director, a student will be allowed to register for GERMAN 4000 while participating in the program.

GERM 3305--German Language Studies--is a conventional intermediate language course that covers the development of all four language skills at the third year level. This course is taught in Wust for the roughly four weeks we spend in the village. Instruction takes place in the morning from 9:30 to 12:00 noon, with a short break after an hour and a half.  PREREQUISITE: GERMAN 2302 or consent of instructor.

GERM 3306--Contemporary Germany--is a course designed to introduce students to various aspects of German history, culture, and society. Accordingly, half of the class consists of discussions in the classroom, and the other half consists of tours on location. The first week of the program is spent traveling through various cities and sites in Germany (in the past, these have included Wilhelmshaven, Quedlinburg, Gernrode, Wernigerode, Wartburg, Burg Falkenstein, and Berlin). This field study, under the direction of the program director or a paid tour guide, is considered part of the course. After we arrive in Wust, the course continues as a more conventional academic course, meeting one hour a day, from 1:00 to 2:00. The program also organizes several additional events and field trips during the weekends of the time spent in Wust. These are likewise considered part of the course, and the students are responsible for attending.  PREREQUISITE: GERMAN 2302 or consent of instructor.
