Course Offerings


In 2009-2010, four Italian courses will be offered
at the Advanced level:

Fall 2009

ITAL 3390: SURVEY OF ITALIAN CINEMA
This course covers the development of Italian
cinema from the 1940’s to the 1990’s. It will
include screenings, close study, analysis of
masterpieces of Italian cinema, and discussions
on how cinema can interpret the history of a
nation.  While readings and lectures aim at
presenting the films within their historical,
social and aesthetic contexts, the discussion
encourages the students to express their
appreciation of the work examined and
respond critically to it.

ITAL 4301: Topics in Italian Literature:
THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE
This course will survey the development of Italian
literature through from the 13th century to the
Early Renaissance, focusing on Italy’s most
significant contributions to Western literature
and culture. Starting from Saint Francis and
Guinizelli, readings and lectures will center on
the three crowns of Florence (Dante, Petrarch
and Boccaccio), Machiavelli and the Early
Renaissance through Epic Poetry (Ariosto).

In Spring 2010, the continuation of Italian Cinema
and Italian Literature will be offered:


ITAL 4315: THE CINEMA OF FEDERICO FELLINI
Federico Fellini is one of the most well-known
directors of all time. and people all over the world
associate Italy with his movies.  This course will
introduce the students to a true icon of European
cinema, covering the development of Federico
Fellini’s movies from the beginnings under Neorealism
to the late years under the Jungian influences.
It will include screenings, close study, analysis
and discussions on Fellini movies.

ITAL 4301: Topics in Italian Literature:
ITALIAN MODERNITIES
This course will focus on the Late Renaissance
(Tasso), Vico, the Romantics (Foscolo and
Leopardi), 19
th century novel (Manzoni,
Verga and D’Annunzio) and the the 20
th
century through Pirandello’s theater and
modern poetry (Montale).
