· Sue Gass inaugurated the Texas Tech Lecture Series in Second Language Studies, January 28, 2008. Her talk, “Teaching Teachers to Talk,” reported on two studies of how L2 teachers interact with students and the extent to which intervention helps teachers to conceive of interaction differently. · The next lecture will be in late March 2008 and will feature Carrie Jackson (Penn State University). Dr. Idoia Elola, Assistant Professor of Spanish and Applied Linguistics and Second Language Studies in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures, is the 2007 recipient of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages-Modern Language Journal (ACTFL-MLJ) Emma Marie Birkmaier Award for Doctoral Dissertation Research in Foreign Language Education. The American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has awarded the 2007 Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education to Dr. Bill VanPatten, Professor of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Studies in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures. |

David Britton, new student in M.A. in AL & SLS, has been awarded an AT & T Chancellor’s Endowed Fellowship for $3000. Yuko Isashiki, 2nd year M.A. student, presented a paper on the teaching of mora in Japanese at the Pacific East Asian Related Languages (PEARL) conference, December 2007. Hillah Culman & Nick Henry will present the paper “The Role of Explicit Information in Processing Instruction: An Online Study with German Accusative Case Inflections” at the Annual Kentucky Foreign Language Conference, April 2008. |
